Hi folks,
I'm using ESX 5.1 now
I have some questions about the VMmark test!
1.
Is the disk space for VM important??
Because I found for the client template.
The space is running out after I install the cygwin
I'm using Windows 2008, the default 32 GB is not enough
Same thing happened on standby VM
The default space is not enough after Windows Update
2.
When asked to Specify the virtual disk size and provisioning policy, enter either 15GB(for you will be
using Windows Server 2003) or 32GB(for you will be using Windows Server 2008), leave the Disk
Provisioningoptions unchecked
For this disk provisioning, I have to choose one from three methods, I cannot leave it uncheckd
Which one I should check??
Is there any document with installation photos to follow??
Thanks a lot...
Alvin
Andre,
Yes, the vCenter is properly registered in the DNS; but, fails to connect when using the host server(s) names. Using the IP address works. Going to go back and verify the DNS server settings in the new vCenter server. I believe you nailed it. Thank you.

1. Am I better off installing ESXI on an SD card and leaving the entire internal storage for my VM's?
yes its would be a better option for you to install the ESXi on the SD card. so that even if the local storage drives fails it does not affect the entire Host.
2. As far as replication of my VM's for DR is the vsphere replication appliance suffice or should I be looking at a different product?
If you ask me i would say the vsphere replication appliance should be good enough for the environment.
Other things you could check is these documents.
Since we are going to be running CPU Intensive applications , Please asses the environment correctly and get a better understanding of the performance on virtualized Environment, http://www.intel.in/content/dam/doc/white-paper/virtualization-xeon-sap-and-vmware-virtualizing-resource-intensive-appli…
This whitepaper should be helpful

Hi Alvin,
1. The disk space for the client is not important. The disk space for the Standby is important. For the client, please modify the client as needed. The disk space for Standby must remain the same. If all Windows updates do not fit in the disk space size, this is okay.
2. You are right, there are no options for you to check there. This wording may need to be fixed in the Benchmarking guide. The default setting will be fine.
No, there are no images accompanying the installation of VMmark. Instead, we are very specific in our installation instructions. As you go through the VMmark installation, please follow each instruction completely and exactly.
Thanks,
Rebecca
Took the class in May and just took the test today and got a 455/500. Very happy with that score and thanks everyone on this forum for the advice in getting ready. It was stressful 3 months of studying almost nonstop. I am happy its over with now and I am certified.
Also from reading on here it looks like I might have an issue with them using the fastrack course I took. The 5.1 fasttrack was done under my work email address, however the email I used to register for the exam was my personal email. Do you guys think I should email vmware or should I wait a little but and see if they sort it out?
Thanks!
Hi Rebecca,
Thanks for your quick reply!
For the cygwin installation
Do we need to install all the packages??
In the guide it shows we need to install all
But the whole package is so large I guess it's more than 10G
Thanks!
Alvin
I think the best place to start will be to attach the vmware.log file, as a file not pasted into the body of the reply, however do this... with the Virtual Machine in a powered off state, not suspended then boot to the Guest OS Desktop, then suspend and then try to resume. Now after doing that archive (compress) the vmware.log files (all 4 of them) for that Virtual Machine into a single .zip archive and attach that to a reply post.
Note: Use the "Use advanced editor" link in the upper right corner of the normal reply window to bring up the Advanced Editor where you'll be able to attach files via the Choose File button or Browse button (depending on the Browser) above the Post Message button!
Hi Thomas,
I'm using ESXi 5.1.0, 799733. VDDK 5.1.1. Seems to be all up-to-date version.
Further I've noticed is that when I using multi-threads to VixDiskLib_Read(), there is a higher chance to get the VIX_E_HOST_NETWORK_CONN_REFUSED error, although I'm following the Multithreading Considerations.
I'll try to go through some logs and share more info if I got something interesting.
I have seen this problem to occur after a Storage vmotion, Try these options and one of them should work for you.
Option 1
Go to Edit Settings in the affected virtual machine and disconnect the vNIC.
Use vMotion to migrate the affected virtual machine to another host.
Reconnect the vNIC after the vMotion operation has successfully completed.
Option 2
Replace the vNIC on the virtual machine:
Obtain the correct network information for the vNIC, such as Static IP, Subnet Mask, VLAN, and the dvPortGroup information.
Shut down the guest virtual machine that reports the error.
Remove the vNIC.
Add a new vNIC and populate it with the information noted in step 1, such as Static IP, Subnet Mask, and VLAN.
Email if you know you'll have an issue like two email addresses. certification@vmware.com
I just had this discussion with someone who was insistent that assigning a VM, for example, with 1 socket and 4 cores that the vCPU was “bound” to one physical CPU (socket not logical) and running on 4 of its cores which is not the case. Then came the question of scheduling and it if it differed if say you had 1 socket and 4 cores or 4 sockets with 1 core each.
As far as Ive been able to research, I can’t find any scheduling differences in either configuration as the vCPU count is the same and as we know, a vCPU is a logical CPU and that’s defined with another example of a server with 2 sockets with 8 cores so has 16 cores or logical processors and if you have hyperthreading enabled this is doubled to 32 logical processors.
I am requesting is there any way to grow or resize the existing partition without reinstalling the OS
Can you clarify this? You appear to be suggesting you are about to buy a DL380 G6 and require advise on how to spec it?
The G6 line has been EOL for some time, replaced first by G7, then Gen8. My first hint would be to purchase a current server platform.
This happened to me as well. Haven't found an explanation yet. I've posited the scenario to my rep so will be sure to add their comments.
It may be storage issue on that particular host....all the VMs are running from shared storage, but this host boots from a local storage.
I can't access any of the logs files... cat /var/log/<any file> locks the SSH session forever.
In dmesg (this one works)... there is indeed something that might be related (it's filtered):
2013-08-22T12:05:37.622Z cpu9:12332924)<4>hpsa 0000:05:00.0: Abort request on C6:B0:T0:L1

Those errors started to appear less than an hour before vcenter lost this host.
For the "df", I wish not to try it... I cannot open new SSH session because VMware refuse to allocate PTYs... too many sessions are frozen.
If you only edit the dhcpd.conf file, it really will not create the .bak file, you can try click save in the UI - Virtual Network Editor, then the dhcpd.conf will change to the default and generate a .bak file to save your edit. This is the same in WS9.0.2 GA. I wonder what exactly operation of you to change dhcpd.conf to the default ?
Are you saying that
Dear Team,
I HAVE NOTICED THAT ON ONE SAN DATASTORE FREE SPACE IS ZERO BYTES, BUT I HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANY ALERTS ON EMAIL, THAT ALERT GENERATED ON 7/5/2012. FOLLOWING IS THE SNAP HOW "DATASTORE USAGE ON DISK" ALARM IS CONFIGURED, PLEASE LET ME KNOW IS IT CONFIGURED PROPERLY (AS PER BEST PRACTICE) OR DO I NEED TO CHANGE ANY SETTING AS WELL AS I WANT THIS ALARM SHOULD TRIGGER ON DAILY BASIS (EMAIL ALERT), UNTIL N UNLESS WE TAKE AN ACTION ON THE SAME.

Is there a timeline for support for what will be the predominant desktop Linux distribution at time of release?
I know this should be obvious, and must have been discussed before, but I'm just trying to provide good feedback for the tech preview.
If anyone has a patch that works, (similar to 3.10 issues), hook me up!
