Re: Hands on Labs - vCM Authentication Problems

Hi,

The lab should still be working.

Did you restart the vCM server before logging in as CORP\Administrator?

The manual says to restart vCM using this command:  shutdown /m \\vcm-w8-01a /r /t 0

Thanks!

Bill

OK thanks for correcting the property - but for some reason even with the corrected property I'm getting the same result - just blank where the IP should be.  I can see the IP configured in vsphere client...

Awesome! Glad it worked out, and the auto-refresh on the page is perfect to avoid the timeout. I'm going to guess it really is just a session timeout, but what made me curious was the random timing you were reporting with it (hours/days). Maybe I'll play around with an instance on my end if I get the time. Either way, happy to hear it's working!

As far as separating your browser instances, why not use profiles in Firefox? You could split it out into separate isolated processes that way. Here's a great LifeHacker article on it: Geek to Live: Manage multiple Firefox profiles

Although I imagine that'll solve the problem with splitting windows, the curiosity in me wants to know what's causing the timeouts.

the Mac (running 10.8.4) had invalid WINS configuration information, pointing to a Windows 2008R2 which didn't have WINS services enabled, so it was just ignoring all the WINS traffic.

Did you mean that Windows 2008R2 was specified as a WINS Server?

Yes, those VMs look fine. To obtain valid benchmark scores, the virtualclient0 should not be in the VMmark cluster, however if your goal is to get VMmark running correctly, it is fine.

Nuclear Cardiology and Dynamic Imaging to Remote Physicians

So my orgnization is implementing McKesson Horizon Cardiology and wishes to make dynamic images available to the docs on the outside - home or office. I guess wall motion imaging is best experienced "in motion". Static images just won't do any more. Couple this with using Segami at the acquisition site.  I would be interested in discussing your experience, either positive or negative.

Yes, the Mac had the IP address of a Windows 2008R2 domain controller set as the WINS server, but that DC didn't have the WINS server role configured. It doesn't look like we need WINS at all in our environment, so disabling it seems to make sense.

vCenter Server 5.1 fresh install w/off box MSSQL database

Hi all,

Looking for some advice on the best way to handle a fresh install of vCenter Server 5.1 using an off-box MSSQL database.  Have done some searches and watched a few of the videos that are out there but haven't quite found what I'm looking for.  So, figured I'd post.  Be gentle - I'm kinda new to the vMware environment.

Here's my scenario.  And if there's a link/doc/post/video that covers what I'm after - great.  Just looking for a little help on finding it.  If not, direct answers will be fantastic too.

- Need to build a vCenter 5.1 server and use an MSSQL off box database.  Out of the gate I'm starting with 6 hosts and 24 guests, which, if I understand things correctly, is just a little bit bigger than SQL Express can handle.  And the host/guest footprint will probably grow over time.

- Have an MSSQL 2008 R2 cluster available to build DB's on.

- My company has existing vMWare/vCenter deployments, but my particular scenario is going to be a one-off, independent setup.

- ESXi hosts will be 5.0 update 1 (to stay within our internal best practices framework.)

- vCenter can be 5.1 for management purposes though.

- Also need to run Update Manager, which if I understand right, kind of excludes the "appliance" version of vCenter, or at the very least, complicates things a bit.

- Leaning towards the Simple Install of vCenter 5.1.  Know this is going to kick off the Single Sign On Server, Inventory Service and vCenter Server installs.  And that the install of the Update Manager will be a 4th (and hopefully final) install.

Where I'm a little confused:

-     How many discrete databases do I actually need?  One school of thought (and practiced in our "other" vMWare environment) is 1 DB for each app called out above.  That seems a little complicated, but if that's the way it has to be, so be it.

-     I'd think I can run just one database and each of the 4 required apps would build/use the required table spaces that they need.  Is that accurate or am I way off base?

-      If 1 single database is doable, can I use one master AD flavored service account for everything, or should I look at AD different service accounts for different functions.

Not entirely sure I"m being completely clear on what I'm after, so fire away with follow on questions if needed.

Can you confirm the new vCenter Server is properly registered in DNS and is able to resolve the ESXi host's FQDN names, i.e. the vCenter Server's IP settings including its DNS server entry are correct? Are you able to connect the hosts using their IP addresses, just to test whether this works.

This happens if the Host management agents are busy or crashed down specially the hostd service. Since only the management agents are down your VM's will still be running and you can RDP in them.

Are you running into any Storage Issues lately..? Did the issue occur after you did a rescan of the storage adapters.?

Select a Host -- configuration -- storage adapters -- devices .. Do you see any dead paths.? If you see any dead paths or any data stores inactive then the Situation what your having here is something similar to an APD.

Check the VMkernel.log and Vobd.log  if its pointing out to any storage related errors.

I actually never did this with DNS servers in place. I think the main reason for editing the hosts file was to make sure HA worked properly. However, things changed and as of vSphere 5.0, HA doesn't depend on DNS resolution anymore.

It turned out the the proxy server for the company was causing the issue.  The network guys here sorted that out and it all started to work properly.
