Could you explain importing of the VDM and the root certificate?  Could you please post how you did this as I cannot figure this out.

ESXi Host Memory Capacity

Hi,

I'm just wondering how people capacity manage their ESXi hosts in regards to memory?? In our old 4.1 environment we disable TPS so large pages werent used and we saw around a 20% redunction on our hosts.

We have since upgraded to 5.1 u1a and new hardware (256Gb instead of 148Gb) and left TPS as default settings and the memory usage is around 60-80% used on the hosts.

From my understanding TPS doesnt use small pages until over 80%

So if you have a 11 node cluster with memory (default TPS) at around 80% on each how do you know how what the capacity left is? If you lost two ESXi will the cluster be ok?

Is it worth disabling large page share and take the so called performance hit? This will therefor be easier to manage the memory on the hosts and when to buy additional hardware.

How to restart a suspended virtual machine?

I tried to update Fusion 4.0 to 4.1; after the update failed I could not restart Fusion.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled Fusion 4.0. After reinstalling Fusion 4.0, I am able to see the suspended virtual machines, but I get the following error messages:

Unable to retrieve kernel zone sizes.

Failed to initialize monitor device.

Cannot find a valid peer process to connect to

Should delete the suspended virtual machine?  Please help

What "reply radio button" are you referring to?  Every Browser I've used the "Reply" is a hyperlink.  (e.g., Reply) (Note: Reply link shown just as example, use normal Reply link at bottom of message to reply.)

> Standard switch for ESXi Management and dvSwitch for vCSHB?

Yes, I use vSS for ESXi mgmt and vDS for vCSHB. But, does that matter?

> Also, could Primary server ping Secondary management IP? Is it only Channel Network they can't communicate?

I can ping secondary mgmt IP from primary and vice versa. I believe it is only Channel Network (IP with no gateway and no DNS) cannot communicate.

Thanks!

I finally got it with this:

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

After running that command (which took several minutes to run in the Terminal window), I went back to Ubuntu Software Center and typed vmware-view-client and successfully installed the software on my Ubuntu 13.04 x64 system.

Re: Constant NetBIOS Name Service query/refresh for Windows 7 VM

Seeing the same symptoms here, constant NetBIOS chatter while Windows 7 is running within VMWare Fusion 5.0.3. Disabling NetBIOS within Windows 7 as per previous post didn't help. Looking at /Library/Preferences/VMware Fusion/vmnet8/nat.conf if I bump up the netbios-related timeouts to 20 seconds:

nbnsTimeout = 20

nbdsTimeout = 20

then indeed I see the busts of NetBIOS packets directed at our domain controller (which doesn't answer) only every 20 seconds, which helps to reduce the traffic, but doesn't eliminate the problem. It may be that the problem is also on the domain controller / active directory side, which would cause the domain controller to ignore these WINS queries?

Also, for vDS, I tried version 5.0, 5.1 and 4.1 (btw, both of my esxi are 5.1).

Use DVS to create sandbox

$

I have a silly question for the forum... Unfortunately I don't have the resources to test this myself right now.

I'm running SRM soft tests of front and back-end Oracle servers. I want to build a sandbox for the VMs so they can communicate with each other, but not traverse any live networks. I would prefer not to vMotion the VMs around during the tests (I would like them to run on different ESXi hosts).

Could I use a standard DVS with no uplinks and a single port group to achieve this?  If this is even possible, how would VM traffic communicate between the ESXi hosts?

Thank you.

vDS version won't matter.

Using vSS for ESXi Management and dvSwitch for vCSHB won't matter, was just wondering.

I think it's physical network layer issue, I don't think there is a mis-configuration on VMware layer, maybe firewall between datacentres?

The error show that the register applicaton has not been loaded by tomcat correctly.

Could you have a look with the tomcat log at /opt/serengeti/tomcat6/logs/catalina.out in Serengeti managment server, you can have a check whether it has some error under the message "INFO: Deploying web application directory register-plugin"

SRM 5 with netapp SRA, FCOE to iSCSI site with RDM

$

Hi Team , could anyone please help to veify if it works in this scenario.

We have PROD site running vmware vcenter 5.0, esxi5.0, SRM 5.0 , on Netapp 3210 filer ONTAP8.1 version. VMs are windows server 2008, MS SQL2008 as major DB. Database files on virtual RDM. Only  FCOE for this site. AD is a physical 2003 server. The rest are VMs

We are proposing to have SRM deployment for DR site. The DR site will be synced with netapp SRA snapmirrror, controlled by SRM5.0 console. DR site has no FCOE, only iSCSI and NFS license availble. Still RDM but using iScsi. vcenter 5.0, esxi 5.0, netapp 2040 ONTAP8.1 .

My questions are:

1. if VMware SRM support DR failover for this case with different protocol ,PROD is FCoE ,DR is iscsi

2. If SRM support failover  with RDM in our case

3. If the AD server at DR site need to  be installed as a new to be best  practice, or we need to use SRM to fail the prod AD over to DR site. what is recommended.

4. If the physical AD can be kept like the current way and SRM still supported

5.  For DR site, which is best practice ? To use  NFS for data store  and iSCSI for iscsi? Or both datastore and RDM use iSCSI LUNs to simplify?

Thanks!

Disk latency data counters. Where can I find them?

$

I’m trying to view the below counters on an ESXi5 host and the link below advises that I should be able to view these from the Performance Advance Charts to view but under this view under Disk the only counters are Highest Latency (as well as Usage, Read rate & Write rate).

1.png

Anyone know where I can view these counters so I can see if my results are within the recommended values further below?

  • kernelLatency data counter
  • deviceLatency data counter
  • queueLatency data counter

http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-51/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.vsphere.monitoring.doc%2FGUID-308BEF5A-4B18-469D-9234-C4AD5CBCA593.html

The best ways to determine if your vSphere environment is experiencing disk problems is to monitor the disk latency data counters. You can use the advanced performance charts to view these statistics.

The kernelLatency data counter measures the average amount of time, in milliseconds, that the VMkernel spends processing each SCSI command. For best performance, the value should be 0-1 milliseconds. If the value is greater than 4ms, the virtual machines on the host are trying to send more throughput to the storage system than the configuration supports. Check the CPU usage, and increase the queue depth.

The deviceLatency data counter measures the average amount of time, in milliseconds, to complete a SCSI command from the physical device. Depending on your hardware, a number greater than 15ms indicates probable problems with the storage array. Move the active VMDK to a volume with more spindles or add disks to the LUN.

The queueLatency data counter measures the average amount of time taken per SCSI command in the VMkernel queue. This value must always be zero. If not, the workload is too high and the array cannot process the data fast enough.

thanks Paul, once the logs and case details bubble up through the Support reference system then I will take a look.
