Esxi 4.1 new 3TB sata hard drive shows up as 0 bytes

Here's what i'm trying to accomplish: I'm trying to figure a way to download a large1TB vm  and subsequently upload it to a Vsphere 5.1 host in the most expeditious manner. One host is on my inside network, the other on the Dmz.  My idea is to add a new datastore to my 4.1 host (on a 3TB sata drive), download the vm image to this new datastore. power off the 4.1 host. Remove the 3 TB drive, physically add it to the 5.1 host and then upload it from there to the desired datastore on the 5.1 host.

I added the 3 TB drive to my dell pe r415 server. I can  see the drive in the bios. when I boot the server up, the esxi 4.1 host loads. In the vshere client, it shows the new drive as being a device with 0 capacity. When I attemp to add a new datastore, i don't get offered this drive. It's a Seagate drive. None of the other existing 3 drives in the server are Raided. What am I missing? Is there a better way to do this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Rob
