Way to hide networks from selected VMs on a common host?

Hopefully this is one of those "duh" moments and there is an easy solution.

Let says I have two clusters.  One cluster is a lab environment with a copy of Active Directory used for testing purposes.  That cluster is now up for life cycle and I wish to merge in with the production cluster and retire the old lab ESXi hosts.  We add the lab networks to the production cluster and all is well for the lab VMs that get migrated over to it.

However, we do not want someone to accidentally assign a production VM to a lab network and vice versa.  So when you go into edit a VM and select the NIC, there is a drop-down list that shows all networks including the new lab networks that were just added.  I want to hide the lab network from our production domain controllers and hide our production networks from or lab domain controllers.  But because they are all on the same cluster, it seems to me that all subnets are fair game to select from in that drop-down list.  Or am I wrong?  Is there a way to lock down networks to only certain VMs so that they do not show up for other VMs to pick from?

Thanks and sorry if there is an obvious solution to this that I am overlooking.
