YES, I know that KB article 1004775 describes the procedure for doing this. But I want to understand some details before I actually do it. Here's the situation:
I have started an upgrade from vSphere 4.1 to 5.1. For various reasons, I decided to build a brand new Virtual Center server, instead of upgrading the old one. So, I have a new VC 5.1 server, as well as an old VC 4.1 server and four ESX 4.1 hosts. I'm ready to move the hosts, one at a time, to the new Virtual Center. The KB article tells me HOW to do this, but I'm concerned about a few things. Maybe you can help.
My four ESX 4.1 hosts share several LUNs on a fibre-channel LAN. Each host is running about 25% of my VMs. Can you tell me the following?:
After I move the first ESX host to the new Virtual Center, what will I see on the new Virtual Center? Obvious I'll see just ONE ESX host. Presumably, this ESX host will still see all the LUNs that the ESX hosts on the old VC still see, right? (If not, things wouldn't work.) What about VMs? Will the VMs on the host that got moved disappear from the old VC's list of known VMs? Or will they still show up there in some way? Will the new VC see ALL the VMs, or just the ones that are running on the one ESX host I moved? The one ESX host on the new VC will still see all the LUNs, so it should "know about" all the VMs I have. Will both Virtual Centers see ALL the VMs? I can imagine that they will, but a VC might be able to manage only those on the hosts it manages.
I just want to make SURE I understand what's going to happen, since this is a production system. I hope someone can help.
