For N1KV I would highly recommend L3 control. Troubleshooting will be so much easier and should you decide to grow the environment or try something like VSG, ASA or VXLAN it will be easier if you are running L3 mode.
For L3 mode we encapsulate Control, mgmt, and traffic through a single interface so you don't need different vlans. In fact you can't even assign vlans to control and packet when they are in L3 mode.
Remember to use the 2.1 code and you get a free 512 socket license if you can use the Essential version.
One thing with N1KV is it works fine in nested configuration so if you want to setup a sample topology on a single ESXi or VMware Workstation host you can.
