You could create a new VM in VMware Workstation and try to attach the virtual disk you have. With VMware Workstation you can add an existing virtual disk (instead of creating a new one) and with VMware Player you may create a new VM with a small virtual disk and replace the .vmdk file(s) after creating it. If the .vmdk file name is different, you need to edit the VM's .vmx file accordingly.
